The Stephan Weiss Lecture Series: Globalization

The 2018-19 Stephan Weiss Lecture Series, “Globalization: Promises, Discontents, and New Futures,” organized by the School of Design Strategies at Parsons School of Design, is an invitation to explore a more nuanced understanding of globalization and the interactions between the local, national, regional, and global that it presumes.

The series encompasses wide-ranging themes including women’s reproductive and gender rights and wellbeing; distributed governance and the future of our cities; designs for the pluriverse in the Global North and the Global South; and innovative responses to meet the needs of displaced and refugee populations. The 2018-2019 Weiss Lectures feature practitioners, activists, and scholars engaged in pathbreaking explorations of the promise and pitfalls of globalization.

The 2018-19 series is co-curated by Mariana Amatullo, associate director of strategic design and management, and Andrew Shea, assistant professor of integrated design, both of Parsons School of Design.

A recent lecture in the series was presented by Indy Johar, a trained & registered architect and Graham Willis Professor at Sheffield School of Architecture. Johar co-founded & established Architecture 00, multiple social start up accelerators, multiple impact hubs in the UK. He also supported the development of multiple open source manufacturing ventures in London—from Open Desk to Wikihouse, and most recently Dark Matter Laboratories.

Johar’s lecture, “The Boring Revolution of Our Cities,” can be streamed below.

The Stephen Weiss lecture series is made possible by an endowment established by the Karan-Weiss Foundation, Donna Karan, Gabrielle Karan, Corey Weiss, and Lisa Weiss.
